Anderson Early-Bird

Track season started off with a bang as the Flashes hosted The Early-Bird Invitational at Anderson. A great meet was put on thanks to the FC parents, who did a GREAT job!

In addition, we had many outstanding performances. Most notably, Shane Wright busted out of the gates with a 2:08 leg on an indoor track, then followed it up wit a PR in the mile. Freshman Phenom Kyle O'Malley lit up the 1200 leg of the DMR with a blazing 3:39, then came back with a 2:16 in the open 800. We have multiple Flashes already on the sub-5:00 list and the season has just barely begun! Perhaps the moment of the night came from Ryon Reed, who came off a neck injury to WIN his heat of the 800 in 2:14!

State Meet

Jason Crist represented the Flashes well at the State Meet in Terre Haute, becoming one of only ten guys to finish with All-State honors for 4 years! Jason placed 18th overall and qualified for the Indiana All Star Team!

Congratulations, Jason. Now he prepares for our post-season and the rest of us begin Winter Conditioning on Friday with some Frisbee!

Semi-State

It was another rough year for the Flashes XC Team at the Carmel Semi-State. We finished a heartbreaking 7th for the third consecutive season, despite being ranking in the top ten statewide each of those years.

The Flashes ran incredibly well, just getting nipped by a strong Lawrence Central squad.

The good news is that Senior Sensation Jason Crist placed 4th at the meet, and will advance as an individual to the state meet.

For full results, check here.

The good news is that we have 10 varsity letter-winners returning next year for the Flashes Boys team. We have one year to get ready to rock and make it back to state!

Sectional and Regional Champs!

The Flashes traveled to New Palestine this past Tuesday, dominating the field at the Sectional Meet and advancing to Regionals. Jason Crist was sectional champion and the Flashes placed 7 runners in the top 10.

On Saturday, the Flashes traveled to Tony Stewart's old stomping grounds of Rushville and put on quite a display. The Flashes dominated the Regional, placing 7 boys in the top 16 spots. Jason Crist was runner-up to a Tate Schienbein of Union County, who has been a solid force in Indiana XC over the past four years.

Now it is on to the Semi-State Meet at Northview Christian Church in Carmel, Indiana. The Flashes must place in the top 6 in order to advance to the following week's state finals in Terre Haute.

Conference Indiana

The Flashes fared well at Conference Indiana, placing third in a "throw back meet" to the Glory Days of Southeastway Park. This is always a tough meet for us, since we race the Marin County meet just a few days prior and must recover quickly.

Race of the day went to Shane Wright, who stepped up running 2nd man for the Flashes.

Full results can be found here.

Marion County

The Flashes traveled to Brebeuf on Saturday in hopes of coming home with the school's first Marion County Championship. Unfortunately, we came up 3rd to a very good North Central team and a lights-out Lawrence Central squad.

The Freshman turned in a fourth place finish, led by frosh sensation RJ Atwal, who placed 5th overall. Even more impressive--RJ lost to only one runner that beat him last year at 8th Grade County. Great work, RJ and FC Freshmen!

In the JV race, FC Junior Shane Wright dominated the field in an impressive 16:54.

This week it is on to the Freshmen 5-way at Warren followed by the Conference Indiana meet on Wedensday at SEway park, where the Flashes match up against 3 top-5 ranked squads.

Full county results can be found here.

Flashrock Invitational

The Flashes were 3rd in the "Green" Race and 6th "Combined" at the Flashrock Invitational on Saturday. We had a great showing from Jason Crist, who was runner-up to NC's Futsum Zeinessellassie, who posted the fastest time in the United States for the year and Indiana history.

The Flashes pack battled from behind all day, but came up just short of beating North Central and Lawrence Central. We also edged out recent rival Zionsville in the combined results.

It certainly is a close and exciting year for Indiana Cross Country. With the "regular season" over, we now enter our County, Conference, and Tournament Series season.

Here are the full results.

Ben Davis Invitational

Both Varsity and JV Boys fared well Saturday at the Ben Davis Invitational. The Varsity was edged out by Zionsville for the second week in a row. To give you an idea of how close the meet was, had our 2-3 runners run a combined 15 seconds faster, we would have won.

Jason Crist had a tough battle from Ben Davis' Luke Brahm, but managed to pull away in the closing 75 meters to get the win and new course record. Full results can be found here.

In JV action, there was a fight to the line between two Flashes: Evan Shuck (1st) and Shane Wright (2nd). Both runners broke the 17:00 barrier! Full results can be found here.

Varsity:

Zionsville 44
Franklin Central 57
Lawrence North 145

JV:

The Flashes will see action again at the co-hosted Flashrock Invitational at Northview Christian Church in Carmel. There should be some fun and exciting races as teams are now winding down their "regular seasons" in preparation for conference, county, and the tournament. Go Flashes!

Early Bird Invitational Results

Saturday was our first meet of the season and we started off both very in-shape and very tired from some hard training! Regardless, the Flashes Boys XC Team finished third place, just ten points behind LC and 39 behind a talented Bloomington South squad. Both of these are conference opponents and we see them multiple times throughout the year. "Races of the Day" went to Newcomer Joey Butcher for running his first 5k in 18:03 and Evan Shuck for scoring his first Varsity Points as a Flash!

Jason Crist started his season with a win, battling up front all day with Carl Smith from Bloomington South and Matt Dorsey from LC, sealing up the win in the final 1,000 Meters for the Flashes!

We still have quite a bit of work to do in preparation for the Semi-state and State meets, which are of course the focus of our season. This summer's training went well and the Flashes found themselves heading to McCormick's Creek for a ton of running, euchre, and lots of team building. At McCormick's Creek we set our sights on an outstanding end-of-season performance. The barn is being filled with hay right now and the boys are doing an outstanding job in practice.

Here are the results from Saturday's meet.

The FCXC Girls Team put forth a dominating performance to win the Early-Bird invitational. It was an awesome display. Congrats to Coaches Spence and Sweetman, runner-up Carolyn Talhelm, and the rest of the FC Girls team on an outstanding start to their season.

Distance Gala: Chicago

Jason Crist and Five of our "Fab Six" Freshmen traveled to Chicago this past weekend to run in the Midwest Distance Gala. This is one of the premier meets in the nation and simply to meet the standards for qualification is quite an honor.

The Flashes Frosh led the way, putting up some remarkable times:

12 Shuck, Evan Indiana 4:46.66
14 Geisler, Peyton Indiana 4:50.13
18 McCauley, Zachary Indiana 4:53.44
22 Hardimon, Eddie Indiana 4:56.39
27 Lewellen, Parker Indiana 5:23.43

This is certainly one of the best Freshman classes in the nation, especially when you throw in Andrew Schmalfeldt, who has run 4:42 and 1:59.

In the fast heat of the mile, Jason Crist represented FC well with a 5th place, PR performance:

5 Crist, Jason Indiana 4:12.47

This was a PR performance for Jason and was the end to a great season in which he held it together all the way from UK Invite in February!

Videos ans full results can be found here.

Now that the lid is on the track season, summer conditioning is underway. Two weeks from now, we'll have the whole team together for practice as we prepare for another run at the State Championships in Terre Haute.

State Meet Results

The Flashes 4x800 team of Andrice Martin, Trevor Rapp, Aaron Nanavaty, and Andrew Schmalfeldt got things rolling at the state meet Friday by running 8:03, their fastest time of the year to place 15th overall! Splits were great, with Andrice and Andrew splitting 1:59 and Aaron and Trevor both clocking 2:01. I'm very proud of this team for making it to state and representing our school with guts and class. The missed the top-ten list by less than 1 second and I expect big things next year!

In the 1600, Jason Crist had his third podium performance, finishing 4th in 4:12.15, the second fastest 1600M of his life. Jason finished behind three incredible seniors, so next year we want the win!

But Jason wasn't done yet. In the 3200M run, Jason got into great position 5 laps into the race, but then began to feel that 4:12! He faded to 9:28, but when you add up 4:12 and 9:28 Jason ran the 13th fastest 1600/3200 double in Indiana state meet history!

It has certainly been a great season and we're looking forward to the Distance Gala in Chicago and starting XC this week.

Practice times:
Monday 6-8 SEway...Bring water
Tuesday 8-10 FCHS; Spring Sports Awards at 6:00PM FCHS Cafeteria
Wednesday 8-10 FCHS Chicago guys only; 6-8PM SEway for XC
Thursday 8-10 FCHS
Friday 8-10 FCHS for some frisbee!
Saturday: Distance Gala in Chcago

Special thanks to all the parents who took pictures, hauled tents, and drove boys this season!

State Qualifiers!

FC Distance had an outstanding Regional meet, with Jason Crist leading the charge as Regional Runner-up in the 1600 and Regional Champion in the 3200, running a stellar 9:10!

Perhaps the most exciting race of the day, though, came as the 4x800 team of Andrice Martin, Trevor Rapp, Aaron Nanavaty, and Andrew Schmalfeldt placed third, qualifying for the state meet in 8:04! On the last lap, Center Grove sensation Austin Mudd was held off by our very own Freshman Phenom Andrew Schmalfeldt (okay, okay...Schmally had about a 9 second lead going into the last leg...but Mudd's run 1:51 so give Schmally some credit!).

Also advancing to state was shot-putter Jared Lantz with a PR throw over 53 feet.

Other Regional qualifiers distance-wise were Austin Presnell (scoring for the Flashes with an 8th place 9:51 effort in the 3200), Andrew Schmalfeldt AGAIN in the open 800 scoring in 8th in 2:01, and "Big Stave" Harrison, who capped off a great career at FC with a 4:41 12th place Regional Finish.

Overall, our team was 4th at Regionals. Full results can be found here. Go Flashes!

Sectionals!

We had a great sectional meet, advancing nearly every distance runner on to Regionals!

Our 4x800 team of Andrice Martin, Aaron Nanavaty, Andrew Schmalfeldt, and Trevor Rapp was sectional runner-up in 8:16.

In the 1600, Big Stave Harrison broke through a barrier to run 4:38, placing 3rd, and Jason Crist cruised to a 4:27 victory.

In the 800, Andrew Schmalfeldt got boxed in and was forced to slow down considerably to get "out and around" nearly everyone in the race. He ran 2:03.19 and placed 4th, advancing to Regionals in the 800 as a Freshman.

In the 3200, Jason Crist cruised to his second victory of the day, running 9:47 and Austin Presnell turned in a PR performance of 9:53, placing 3rd.

Next Up: Regionals on Thursday at Connersville! This meet tends to run quickly and is loaded with some great distance teams including Columbus North, Center Grove, Warren Central, and an up-and-coming Greenwood team.

Go Flashes!

Varsity County

Our 4x8 team started the night well by running 8:04.95 and placing 3rd behind two of the best teams in the state: LC and Warren. We will get another shot at the Warriors during the Sectional and Regional! The team consisted of Andrice Martin, Trevor Rapp, Aaron Nanavaty, and Jason Crist.

In the 1600, Steven Harrison ran 4:40, nearly breaking through that difficult time barrier. Big Stave will get another crack at the 4:40 mark at the upcoming Sectional meet.

In the 3200, Matt Shaw and Austin Presnell both ran gutsy races, competing well with some big-time runners. Austin broke 10:00 for the second time (9:57) placing 5th in Marion County. Matt scored for the Flashes placing 8th in 10:14.

In the 800, Jason Crist catapulted himself into the #7 all-time spot with a time of 1:56.82. Jason joins Aaron Fisher and Adam Green as the only Flashes to be a part of ALL 4 Distance Top-ten Lists!

Congratulations Flashes...now it's on to the Sectional meet!

Warren Relays and Freshman County

Another great week of racing!

On Tuesday, we traveled to Roncalli and had some big-time PRs. Most notable performances:

Kieron Randall PRs 2:21 in the 4x800, then comes back to run 2:21 again in the 800!
Shane Wright is the 20th FC Distance runner under 5:00!
Brad Loeffler PRs again, finishing the 3200 in a time of 11:49!

On Thursday, we traveled to Warren Central for the Warren Relays. Most notable performances:

4x1600 Team of Crist, Webb, Martin, and Harrison finishes 2nd Overall!
Evan Marrero drops a PR 2:08.9 as the Flashes finish 4th in the 4x8!
The DMR Team of Crist (3:07 1200), Wright (52.8 400), Nanavaty (2:03.1 800), and Presnell (4:35 1600) holds off Ben Davis to get the WIN!

Then on Saturday, we had an exciting day of racing at Franklin Central for the Freshman County. Most notable performances:

The 4x800 team of McCauley, Schmalfeldt, Shuck, and Geisler WINS!
Andrew Schmalfeldt WINS the 1600 in a tactical race that a gutsy Eddie Hardimon led!
In the 800, Zach McCauley WINS his heat and Peyton Geisler finishes 4th overall!
In the 3200, Parker Lewellen passes Evan Shuck in the lead pack! In the end, both end up scoring for the team and Shuck is 3rd overall in a tactical, sit-and-kick race!
Our ALL-DISTANCE 4x4 of Shuck, Schmalfeldt, Geisler, and Hardimon finishes 4th with a 55.8 kicker from Schmalfeldt and a :56.2 lead leg from Geisler!

Congratulations, guys! Now we're off to Varsity County (Wednesday), the Fast Flash (Saturday), and then it's Sectional time!!!

Conference Indiana Results

The boys ran well at conference...most notably Jason Crist anchored the 4x8 to a third pace finish, won the 1600 in 4:21, and then won the 3200 in 9:10, the second fastest time in school history behind his own record.

Austin Presnell also joined the ranks of sub-10 2-Milers with a 9:53 6th place finish.

One of the most interesting races of the day was Andrice Martin's 4x400 leg in which he split 23.3 for his first 200 without using blocks (this would have scored in the open 200) and then managed to hold together a :30 for a solid lead-leg.
Andrice also ran a great lead-leg of the 4x800 in 1:58.

We finished up a big week of meets today with successes at W Lafayette Relays, running 8:09 in the 4x800 and 18:32 in the 4x1600. Evan Shuck also had a great race in the 3200, running right around 10:30 for the third time this season. Great Time to be a Flash!

Jason Crist broke the 9:00 barrier last week at the Arcadia Invitational in California. Jason now holds the school record in the event and is the 11th fastest runner in Indiana 3200M history!

A full video of the race can be found by clicking here.

In additon, we have had many great performances including an 8:14 performance for our 4x800 team at the Flashes Showcase meet in which Andrice Martin split 1:58 then came back to run a 50.8 on the 4x400. Unofficially, I think this is the fastest 4x400 split in the history of distance runners at FCHS!

At that same meet (last Friday) we had FIVE freshman run 5:00 or better in the 1600! Here are the fab 5 at the start of the race (Schmalfeldt, Shuck, Geisler, McCauley, and Hardimon):

As you can tell, it has been a great start to the outdoor season for the Flashes with a meet on Thursday vs. Greenwood, Saturday at West Lafayette, and then Monday vs. Roncalli and New Palestine to wrap up the "regular season."

Side note: if you have not been running it's time for parents and alumni to dust off the running shoes and begin training for the 2011 Fast Flash on Saturday May 14.

Seeds for Friday

Seeds for the meet on Friday can be found here.

Ice Day!

Today is a great time to get in a few sets of abs and brush up on your Tae-Bo! It's not a good idea to run on the roads, but if you have access to a treadmill you might get in 30 minutes!

Remember it's a long season and many guys need a few days off to recover from injury or sickness anyways!

Track Calendar

Here is a calendar with important dates for Track and Field. Note that not all meets will be run by all athletes. For example, UK Invite is for our top guys only. Some smaller meets we will only attend if necessary (say we need a qualifying time for an athlete).

Thanks!!!
