13th in the State!

Congratulations to the Franklin Central boys for finishing 13th in the IHSAA State Finals. Out of over 300 schools that field a cross country team, to finish 13th is an outstanding success. All of our hard work paid off!

Congratulations, guys! You earned it!

State Qualifiers!

Sorry I have not updated throughout the tournament, but I do have some incredible news:

The Flashes were Sectional champions, then Regional Champions, and today achieved our season goal of qualifying for the IHSAA State Finals to be run in Terre Haute next Saturday.

Special congratulations to Shane Wright for a 13th place semi-state finish. Shane would have qualified for the state finals even had the team not advanced. I am proud of the character and leadership Shane has shown in these last few weeks and proud of the team for stepping up big when it counts!

Warren Freshman Invite

The Freshman County Champions represented again on Tuesday at WC Freshman Invitational. We had some huge PRs and nipped Brebeuf on the sixth man to take home a second place finish. This was the story of the season for this squad. Coach Jones had the top 15 finishers on the "podium" and said, "This is the future of Indiana Cross Country." No Flashes were on the Podium...but as a team we ended up second. These guys are the future of our program and they are off to a wonderful start!

Marion County

FRESHMAN COUNTY CHAMPS!

Our freshman peaked their season with a victory at Marion County on Saturday. I am so proud of this group of underdogs. They came together this season and worked hard to take home the trophy. What a great group of young runners...the future of the program is bright! Luke Moore and Collin Hassinger led the charge with all-county honors.

In the open race, we set 16 season-bests in a great effort. Andrice Martin led the charge by winning the open race in a solid 17:16.

Our varsity guys were out a bit quick and paid late, but still ended up 6th behind five great teams. Shane Wright (All-County) and Zach McCauley both set PRs for the Flashes.

Now we gear up for our conference meet on Wednesday and then it is on to the tournament!

Good luck everyone and congratulations freshmen!

Flashrock

What an incredible meet! Thank you to all of our parent volunteers and Coach Kellison for making this meet run so smoothly. Another big thank you to Coach Lidskin from Westfield and their athletic department for organizing the event. In my opinion, the new format is much more exciting for all teams involved.

On top of that, we ran well...edging out rival Zionsville by a mere 5 points for a 14th place finish in our famous 1968 baby blue uniforms. PRs were abound for the Flashes all day and this is a testament to our hard work and training. Now we have one weekend off as we prepare for our County, Conference, and tournament series.

Ben Davis Invite

The guys ran great on a soaked Ben Davis Invite Course. This is usually the fastest course we go to, but Mother Nature turned it into the slowest! Not only was the course too wet to run on, but the new course was also about 350M long (60 seconds or so...hard to say).

Anyways, we threw time out the window today and raced hard. We ended up with two runner-up finishes behind the state's best #1 Carmel Greyhounds in both varsity and reserve. I couldn't be more proud of the way our guys performed today and how our team chemistry is developing!

Eddie "Money" Hardimon won the fighter of the week award for toughing out the end of the race and holding off a charging Chesterton runner by 2 seconds to earn FC runner-up honors on the "sixth man rule."

Noblesville Hokum Karem

Before I begin, let me take a second to promote the Facebook group "FCXC Parent Club." This is an AWESOME group with great pictures and conversations. Please join!

The Flashes ended an outstanding week with a great showing at Noblesville Hokum Karem.

The varsity got the day off right with a 3rd place finish, right between north-side rivals Zionsville and North Central. These are two well-coached and competitive programs and they will be battling us at meets throughout the year on all levels. To be "in the mix" with them at this meet shows we are at a good level of fitness for this point in the season.

The reserve race was a Flashes-dominated event, with Andrew Schmalfeldt finally over his cold and back into racing. Kyle O'Malley is finally figuring out that Cross Country and Soccer are both run on grass, and toe it up for a 3rd place finish. Overall, we went 2-3-5-8 up front Noah "Headbutt" Hertenstein and Matt "I Remembered my Spikes" Gehrich both running great. Peyton Geisler turned off the points meter for the Flashes with a 12th place finish, sealing the win.

I couldn't me more proud of our efforts and attitudes this week. Full results can be found here.

Carmel Classic

On Saturday, the Flashes took on some of the best teams in the state and ended up 4th! This was a good start to our season, especially after a great week of training. We were defeated by three highly-ranked teams, but also beat some highly ranked teams. These battles will continue as our season progresses.

#1 Carmel 20
#21 North Central 40
#17 Zionsville 42
#16 Franklin Central 62
UNR Warren Central 89
#32 West Lafayette 96
#26 Center Grove 98
#37 Chesterton 112

Perhaps the most impressive part of the day was the Freshman 4k. These guys really over-performed and I was ecstatic. Our freshman got nipped by a strong Zionsville squad by two points, but we will see them later this year for another battle.

In the JV race, the Flashes battled hard, especially over the second half of the race and finished a close third, again getting barely nipped by Zionsville.

Races of the Day Awards were as follows:

Kick(s) of the Week: Luke Dewitte and Noah Hertenstein
Coach Dunham "Pontiac Pride" Race of the Week: Austin Presnell
Coach Puckett "Fighter of the Week" Award: Jeb King
Coach Dunn's "Dug the Deepest" Shovel Award: Peyton Geisler

Midwest Distance Gala

As usual, the Flashes had a great time at the Midwest Distance Festival (formerly called Midwest Distance Gala, but now under new management).

Our fab-four freshmen had a ton of fun, learned a few things, and ran well. Robbie Talhlem definitely earned race-of-the-day honors with a PR Mile.

Jason Crist got out well, but the rabbit slowed up a bit on lap two. When the rabbit stepped off the track, Jason was put in the lead of a field of 7 sub-9:00 2-Milers. He led all of lap three, but the field got the best of him on lap four and he ended up 8th in a national-level elite race.

STATE CHAMPION

Congratulations to Jason Crist for winning the IHSAA State Championship in the 1600M Run. Jason's time of 4:09.12 solidifies him as one of the best runners in Indiana history. The splits I got for Jason are as follows (they might be a bit wrong because I was screaming my head off the entire race):

By 200: 30.1 - 62.8 - 94.9 - 2:07.2 - 2:39.3 - 3:10.8 - 3:40.6 - 4:09.1.

By 400: 62.8, 64.4, 63.6, 58.3

Last 300 was 42.5.

Last 200 was 28.5.

Thanks to Todd Nolting for the video of the race that can be found here.

Congratulations also goes out to our 4x800 and 4x400 Qualifiers: Dakota Gray, Shane Wright, Aaron Nanavaty, Trevor Rapp, Johnnie Taylor, John Howard, and Jason Crist. The 4x800 finished 23rd and the 4x400 was 27th in the State of Indiana (over 300 schools are in the IHSAA).

Marion County and Final Time Trial

Great job Flashes at the Marion County Meet! Performance of the day was definitely Matt Shaw, who clocked 4:27.59 to move to 10th all-time in Franklin Central history.

Shane Wright also had an incredible performance in the 800, running 1:59 to hand off in the lead and then later running 2:00 to win the second heat of the event and place 8th overall. The Flashes finished 4th overall to 3 solid teams, nearly getting revenge on a tough Brebeuf squad.

Evan Shuck also had a big PR for the Flashes, moving into the top-ten all-time for sophomores. Evan ran 4:36.55 and placed 11th, just out of scoring.

Jason Crist of course turned in a solid performance of 1:55.3 in the 800 and then lit up the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay in 50.0, the fastest ever split by a distance runner in FC history.

The Flashes Austin Presnell then turned in a solid performance in the 3200, placing 5th overall.

Earlier in the evening, we ran another time trial, trying to get more guys under 5:00. Eddie Hardimon decided to run the 3200 instead, and snuck under 11:00. Great job, Eddie!

Conference/Time Trial

What a proud day to coach the Flashes!

We started off the evening with a hot-weather mile time trial in which we got 2 more guys under the elusive 5:00 mark and then closed out the evening with a solid 4x800 performance (4th), two great races in the 3200, and Zach McCauley running a big PR 4:44 in the 1600.

The highlight of the night, though, has to be Jason Crist's 4th consecutive Conference Indiana Championship in the 1600M. This is a fairly young conference (est. 1997) so I'd venture to guess Jason is the only athlete to ever win 4 CI Titles in any event. His freshman year, Jason had his breakout track race at this meet, getting his first HS title.

Thanks to Coach Robo for attending the meet tonight and to Pike HS for putting on a great meet.

Remember we will have a parent meeting on Monday at 6:00 PM to kick off...Cross Country Season!!!

Flashes Showcase

The guys ran great at Flashes Showcase on our home track!

Starting out the evening were RJ Atwal and Kyle O'Malley, both with PRs in the 1600 (4:52.58 for Kyle and 4:55.54 for RJ).

In the 4x800, Matt Shaw got a surprise announcement 45 minutes out that Andrew Schmalfeldt (AKA "Hammer Time") couldn't run due to a blister. Matt stepped up HUGE for the Flashes as they ran to a 3rd place finish in a season-best time of 8:07.18.

Shane Wright, Aaron Nanavaty, and Evan Marrero all posted PRs in this monster effort. Final Splits: Shane 1:59.4, Aaron 2:00.2, Matt 2:02.1, Evan 2:04.5.

In the 4th race of the night for the Flashes boys, Austin Presnell posted 4:31.66 and I'm counting that as his PR without Jason pushing him around the track!

In the last race of the evening, Jason Crist ran a patient and gutsy race on his home track, taking the lead with 400M to go and never looking back despite great efforts by two juniors: HSE's Troy Reeder and LC's Matt Dorsey. Jason ran his PR and currently has the state's fastest time in the mile for 2012 4:10.18.

a HUGE Thank you to our sponsors for this race, DJ Tony "Tupuck Shakur" Puckett, and especially Coach Kellison and Coach House for organizing the whole event!

I believe Jason Crist ran the fastest 1600M Relay Carry in Indiana history. It was a battle to the line with Carmel, but the officials gave 2nd to Carmel by .01. What an incredible end to the day!

UK High School Invite

This Saturday FC's 4x800 and 4x400 teams traveled to Lexington, KY to participate in the UK High School Invitational. Both teams were very successful, with the 4x400 team placing 6th and the 4x800 team placing 4th, missing a medal by .01 seconds! It was quite a finish, but the race director made a judgment call and gave it to the other team :(

Now track season has officially begun and we are off to a great start! Here are the splits from Saturday:

2:04.85 Nanavaty
1:57.10 Crist
2:04.72 Presnell
2:07.63 Dhadwal
